Matchday nine of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers left Group C finely balanced, with Nigeria, Benin Republic, and South Africa all still in contention for a ticket to the global showpiece, Soccernet.ng reports.

The Cheetahs of Benin currently sit at the top of the group table with 17 points after a hard-fought 1-0 win over Rwanda.

Meanwhile, South Africa's Bafana Bafana sit second on 15 points. Super Eagles follow closely in third with 14 points after defeating Lesotho 2-1 in Polokwane.

With just one game left to play, the 2013 AFCON champions, the Benin Republic and South Africa all remain in the race to secure automatic qualification.

How Nigeria, Benin & South Africa Can Qualify

On the final matchday, Benin will qualify for the 2026 World Cup if they defeat their West African neighbours. The Cheetahs could also seal qualification with a draw, provided South Africa fail to beat Rwanda.

For South Africa, a win against Rwanda would guarantee qualification if Benin lose to the Super Eagles. However, anything less than victory could open the door for their rivals.

Nigeria’s path is the most difficult. The Super Eagles must beat Benin and hope South Africa fail to win against Rwanda.

Moreover, the Eagles will need to win by three or more goals to overtake Benin on goal difference should the two sides finish level on points.

With everything on the line, Group C is expected to be a dramatic conclusion on matchday ten.
