Matchday nine of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers produced crucial results across Group C, Soccernet.ng reports.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria, Benin Republic, and South Africa are all battling to strengthen their chances of reaching the 2026 World Cup.

The 2013 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) champions kept their qualification hopes alive with a 2–1 win over Lesotho in Polokwane, thanks to goals from William Troost-Ekong and Akor Adams.

Meanwhile, the Republic of Benin edged Rwanda 1–0, and South Africa were held to a frustrating 0–0 draw by Zimbabwe.

Benin Tighten Grip on Top Spot

Benin Republic have maintained their place at the top of Group C with 17 points after a strong run of form under Gernot Rohr.

The Cheetahs are now just one win away from sealing a historic World Cup qualification if results go their way on the final matchday against the Super Eagles.

Nigeria Stay Alive in Qualification Race

The Super Eagles remain in third place with 14 points, just three behind leaders Benin. Despite a shaky campaign, Eric Chelle’s men still have a chance to qualify if they win their final fixture and other results favour them.

South Africa Still in Contention

Bafana Bafana dropped to second after losing three points for fielding an ineligible player, Teboho Mokoena, against Lesotho, and their goalless draw against Zimbabwe.

However, they remain firmly in the race with 15 points. A win in their final outing could see them overtake Benin, depending on other group results.

What's At Play For Nigeria, Benin & South Africa?

The final round of Group C matches will be decisive. Nigeria will face Benin Republic at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, while South Africa take on Rwanda at home.

With just three points separating the top three teams, everything is still to play for in group that has been labelled Africa’s most competitive World Cup qualifying group.
