Brentford full-back Michael Kayode has fuelled fresh speculation about his international future after following the official Instagram account of the Super Eagles of Nigeria, Soccernet.ng reports.
The social media move comes just as head coach Eric Chelle hinted that he could invite one or two players ahead of next month’s World Cup playoffs.
The 21-year-old, born in Italy to Nigerian parents, is still eligible to play for Nigeria despite representing Italy at the youth level.
Kayode, who joined Brentford from Fiorentina on a long-term deal until 2030, has been one of the Premier League’s most promising young full-backs this season.
Eric Chelle’s remark sparks new excitement
Speaking to Nigerian legend Segun Odegbami on 90 Minutes with Mathematical on Eagle7 FM on Saturday, Chelle said:
“I will bring one or two players for November [2026 World Cup playoffs], and we will see after.”
Although the Franco-Malian coach did not name the players, the Nigerian football community was quick to link his comments to Kayode’s latest Instagram activity, which many see as a possible signal of interest in representing Nigeria.

Kayode’s performances have been key for Brentford this season. In the Bees’ clash against Liverpool, he delivered the long throw that led to a goal, won all five of his duels, completed both take-ons, and contributed seven recoveries and three clearances, according to FourFourTwo.
This has made the defender an attractive prospect for the Nigerian national team, considering Ola Aina's injury.
Super Eagles’ next move
While following a team on social media is hardly an official declaration, the timing of Kayode’s action, coupled with Chelle’s statement, has amplified talk of a potential call-up.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has yet to comment publicly on the player’s status, but with Chelle’s intent to strengthen his squad, the door appears open.
