Super Eagles midfielder Joe Aribo missed out on a move away from Southampton during the 2025 summer transfer window…

Former Nigeria international Ahmed Garba has backed Joe Aribo to revive his Southampton career after returning to the squad, Soccernet.ng reports.

The Enyimba International and Kano Pillars forward points to Paul Onuachu’s success—signing a permanent deal with Trabzonspor—in Turkey as an example.

After a successful stint at Trabzonspor in the 2023/2024 season, where he scored 17 goals and provided four assists during his season-long loan move.

Meanwhile, he has recently returned to Turkey and has scored two goals in five Super Lig appearances.

Aribo endured a frustrating spell on the sidelines following Southampton’s relegation from the Premier League. This has sparked rumours of a possible exit during the summer transfer window.

However, the former Rangers FC midfielder has remained at St Mary’s and is now reintegrating into the first team under Will Still.

What Ahmed Garba Said About Aribo's Transfer

Garba, who earned six caps for the Super Eagles, admitted he initially wanted Aribo to leave the Saints after their drop to the EFL Championship but believes the Nigerian must now focus on winning back his place.

“Personally, I wanted Aribo to leave the club when they were relegated, but since that did not work, it is important he gets reintegrated into the team and starts playing football again,” Garba told Footy-Africa in an exclusive interview.

“It is not good for a footballer to be on the sidelines, even though I understand why it happened. But it is also important that he starts playing again, as staying out for a long time is not good for him. Look at Onuachu, who left them and is now settled playing football in Turkey, but Aribo has not even played one game this season from what I gathered.

“He is a good and creative player who will do well for Southampton if they give him the chance. I know he will have to work extra hard to get into the team, but I believe in his ability.”

The 29-year-old has two years left on his Southampton contract and will be eager to force his way into Still’s plans as the Saints aim for a swift return to the Premier League.
