One-time Champions League winners on alert as Sevilla terminate Kelechi Iheanacho’s contract

Sevilla have confirmed the departure of Nigerian striker Kelechi Iheanacho after reaching an agreement to terminate his contract, opening the door for Celtic to make their move, Soccernet.ng reports.

The 28-year-old forward only joined the Spanish club last year after leaving Leicester City on a free transfer.

But with game time limited under new Sevilla boss Matías Almeyda, his stint in Andalusia has ended just 14 months into a deal that was due to run until 2026.

Iheanacho made 11 appearances in Sevilla colours, scoring three goals, before being loaned to Middlesbrough in January. His time on Teesside was modest — one goal and two assists in 15 Championship games — but offered him more minutes than he was afforded in Spain.

Back at Sevilla this summer, he found himself frozen out, failing to make Almeyda’s squad for the opening three La Liga fixtures. That omission made a split inevitable.

Kelechi Iheanacho to Celtic?

Former Manchester City forward Iheanacho, capped more than 50 times for Nigeria, is now free to negotiate with any club.

Celtic are understood to be leading the chase, with manager Brendan Rodgers keen on a reunion with a player he coached at Leicester.

The Scottish champions, who crashed out of the Champions League qualifiers to Kairat Almaty last month, are looking to reinforce their frontline ahead of the Europa League campaign. Iheanacho’s availability outside the transfer window hands them breathing space to complete the deal without deadline-day pressure.

Celtic’s pedigree needs little introduction. With 55 league titles, 42 Scottish Cups and a European Cup triumph in 1967, they remain one of the most decorated clubs in world football. But Rodgers knows his side needs more firepower if they are to compete on the European stage this season.

For Iheanacho, the move would hand him another chance to revive a career that once promised so much.

A precocious talent at Manchester City, he struggled to establish himself in the Premier League but showed flashes of brilliance at Leicester, scoring crucial goals during their FA Cup-winning run in 2021.

Now a free agent, Iheanacho’s next destination could decide whether he becomes a key figure in Scotland or drifts further from Europe’s top stage.
