Deadline day drama: Why Nigeria’s Umar Sadiq remains unwanted at Real Sociedad

Umar Sadiq has been left in limbo at Real Sociedad after deadline-day moves to Valencia and Girona collapsed, Soccernet.ng reports.

The Nigerian striker was keen on leaving Sociedad either permanently or even on another loan deal but he was left frustrated as he now has to remain at San Sebastián unwanted and without a squad number.

The Umar Sadiq, 28, had set his heart on a return to Valencia, where he enjoyed a successful loan spell last season.

Negotiations between the two clubs stretched into the final hours of the transfer window, but Sociedad refused to accept Valencia’s €4m bid, holding firm for closer to €6m.

Valencia’s director of football, Ron Gourlay, explained their side of the breakdown:

“At the beginning we had several options and, obviously, it started with a loan. Then we showed that we were ready for a permanent transfer. Unfortunately, it didn’t work out. It simply couldn’t be done. We made a good offer that was rejected. There has to be an agreement between the three parties and it hasn’t happened. Nothing more.”

Girona attempted to step in on deadline day, activating an offer Sociedad had been considering for weeks.

But with financial details unresolved and time slipping away, the deal collapsed before the 11pm cut-off.

The Kaduna-born striker responded with a message on Instagram, posting a line from the Quran:

“My Lord, I am in great need of whatever good You may send me.”

Sadiq’s philosophical outburst is a stark reflection of his current position.

Umar Sadiq remains on Sociedad’s books, registered for La Liga but stripped of a squad number. Manager Sergio Francisco does not see him as part of his plans, yet the club could not push through an exit.

Saudi Arabia and Turkey remain possible escape routes, with both markets open beyond Europe’s deadline. But unless a solution emerges quickly, Sadiq will be forced to wait until January for another opportunity to move.

Valencia, meanwhile, turned elsewhere, finalising a loan deal for Argentine striker Lucas Beltrán from Fiorentina.

Gourlay made clear the club bore no ill will despite the collapse:

“Real Sociedad initially wanted a transfer, and we wanted a loan, but then we presented a purchase offer that was ultimately rejected. We’re not angry with Real Sociedad because we understand these things happen sometimes.”

For Sociedad, Monday night turned out to be the end of a hectic final day of transfer business. While midfielders Yangel Herrera and Carlos Soler were brought in, attempts to trim the squad proved more complicated. Hamari Traoré sealed a move to PSG, Sheraldo Becker left for Osasuna, but deals for both Sadiq and Álvaro Odriozola stalled.

Club president Jokin Aperribay had hinted during pre-season that Sadiq might yet play a role this term, noting the forward had “trained very well” with the group in Zubieta.

But his omission from the squad list reveals how far he has fallen from the first-team picture.

For now, Sadiq is caught in a holding pattern. The former AS Roma and Rangers star wanted Valencia, Sociedad wanted cash, Girona ran out of time. The only certainty is that he remains in Spain, unwanted, and waiting for a way out.
