Nigeria vs South Africa: Controversial Gabon referee appointed for World Cup qualifier

FIFA has confirmed Gabonese referee Pierre Ghislain Atcho will take charge of Nigeria’s crunch World Cup qualifier against South Africa next Tuesday in Bloemfontein, Soccernet.ng reports.

Atcho, 31, will be joined by fellow Gabonese officials Boris Marlaise Ditsoga and Amos Abeigne Ndong as assistants, while Cregue Fleury Moukagni has been named fourth official. The referee assessor will be Olivier Safari Kabene from DR Congo, with Uganda’s Mike Letti acting as match commissioner.

The appointment comes with baggage.

Atcho was caught up in controversy at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations following a stormy last-16 clash between hosts Ivory Coast and Senegal.

He came under fire for a series of controversial calls, including failing to punish Sadio Mané for a reckless tackle, ignoring a potential penalty for the Ivorians, and waving away Senegalese appeals for a spot-kick.

The performance drew scathing criticism in West Africa which saw Atcho dropped from officiating duties during the rest of the tournament.

Nigeria, sitting fourth in Group C, can ill afford any distractions.

South Africa’s 3-0 demolition of Lesotho on Friday leaves the Bafana Bafana nine points clear of the Super Eagles at the top of the table. Defeat in Uyo against Rwanda on Saturday would all but end Nigeria’s chances of reaching the 2026 World Cup.

Chadian official Allaou Mahamat will handle that fixture, assisted by compatriots Bogollah Issa, Moussa Hafiz, and Abdelkerim Ousmane. Egypt’s Taher Abdelsalam Mahmoud is listed as referee assessor, with Gambia’s Bakary Jammeh as commissioner.

It sets up a defining week for the Super Eagles. Beat Rwanda, and Eric Chelle’s men can approach the South Africa clash with a lifeline. Drop points, and the road to North America 2026 may be closed before they even set foot in Bloemfontein.
