The Super Falcons of Nigeria will face South Africa in a crucial CAF WAFCON's play-in round clash in Casablanca on Thursday, with a place in the FIFA Women's World Cup inter-confederation play-offs at stake, Soccernet.ng reports.

Nigeria's hopes of securing automatic qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup were ended by a narrow 1-0 defeat to Cameroon in Sunday's quarter-final.

South Africa suffered a similar fate, losing 2-1 to hosts Morocco despite Thembi Kgatlana scoring in the second half to give Banyana Banyana hope of a comeback.

The two African giants now meet in a high-pressure play-off, with the winner advancing to the inter-confederation play-offs for the 2027 World Cup in Brazil.

For Nigeria, it is an opportunity to recover from the disappointment of missing out on a direct World Cup ticket and maintain their record of appearing at every edition of the Women's World Cup since 1999.

South Africa, meanwhile, will be desperate to keep their own World Cup ambitions alive.

Nigeria vs South Africa – Match Preview

Nigeria arrive at the play-in round after a frustrating quarter-final defeat to Cameroon. The Super Falcons dominated possession and created numerous opportunities but were punished by Maéva Nyadjou's 19th-minute goal.

Nigeria finished the match with 19 shots, including nine on target, but could not find a way past the Cameroonian defence. That defeat will make the Super Falcons determined to respond against Banyana Banyana.

Justine Madugu's side had entered the knockout stage with confidence after recovering from their opening 3-2 defeat to Malawi with victories over Zambia and Egypt.

The 6-2 demolition of Egypt was impressive, but the Cameroon defeat exposed a familiar problem: the Super Falcons' profligacy in front of goal, an area Madugu must address against South Africa.

The Banyana Banyana also enter Thursday's encounter with disappointment still fresh. South Africa pushed Morocco hard in their quarter-final but eventually lost 2-1. Sakina Ouzraoui Diki and Hanane Ait El Haj gave the hosts a two-goal advantage before Kgatlana pulled one back in the 67th minute.

South Africa were unable to find an equaliser, ending their hopes of winning a second WAFCON title. The result nevertheless showed that Desiree Ellis' side remain capable of competing with Africa's strongest teams, but now have to recover quickly because there is little room for error.

Nigeria vs South Africa: Form and Head-to-Head

Nigeria's historical record remains stronger, although South Africa have narrowed the gap in recent years. The most recent meeting between both sides came at the 2024 WAFCON last year, when Nigeria defeated South Africa 2-1.

However, South Africa have also caused Nigeria problems in recent years. Banyana defeated the Super Falcons 2-1 at the 2022 WAFCON, while the two sides played out a 0-0 draw in the second leg of their 2024 Olympic qualifying tie. Nigeria advanced from that Olympic qualifying contest after winning the first leg 1-0.

The rivalry also produced a 4-3 penalty shootout victory for Nigeria after a 0-0 draw at the 2018 WAFCON, while the Super Falcons won 2-1 when the sides met in the 2014 tournament.

Nigeria's overall advantage remains significant, but recent clashes have shown that South Africa are no longer intimidated by the continent's most successful women's national team.

Team News: Banyana Banyana vs Super Falcons

Nigeria are expected to retain the core of the team that started against Cameroon. Chiamaka Nnadozie remains a key figure in goal, while Michelle Alozie, Osinachi Ohale, Blessing Demehin and Shukurat Oladipo provide experience and cover in defence.

Captain Rasheedat Ajibade will again be central to Nigeria's hopes of controlling the midfield and creating opportunities in the final third.

Asisat Oshoala remains the most experienced attacking option available to Madugu, while Toni Payne, Uchenna Kanu and Esther Okoronkwo provide additional firepower.

Gift Monday and Jennifer Echegini are also options for Madugu if he decides to refresh his attacking approach. Overall, Nigeria's major concern will be their efficiency in front of goal.

The Super Falcons had nine shots on target against Cameroon but still failed to score, making their attacking decision-making one of the biggest issues heading into the South Africa clash.

South Africa, meanwhile, have several of their established stars available. Thembi Kgatlana remains the biggest threat after scoring against Morocco.

Hildah Magaia, Linda Motlhalo, Noxolo Cesane and Gabriela Salgado also give Ellis several options in attack.

Captain Refiloe Jane remains an important presence in midfield, while Andile Dlamini and goalkeeper Kaylin Swart provide experience between the posts.

There have been no major new injury concerns publicly reported from either camp ahead of Thursday's match.

Match Details

  • Fixture: Nigeria vs South Africa
  • Tournament: CAF Women's Africa Cup of Nations – World Cup Play-In Round
  • Date: Thursday, August 13, 2026
  • Time: 9:00 PM (Nigerian time)
  • Venue: Stade Moulay Rachid, Casablanca, Morocco

CAF's official schedule confirms that the quarter-final losers of the WAFCON 2026 will meet in two play-in matches on August 13, with the winners advancing to the FIFA Women's World Cup inter-confederation play-off route.

Possible Lineups

South Africa: Swart; Dhlamini, Mbane, Gamede, Motau; Jane, Motlhalo, Cesane; Kgatlana, Magaia, Seoposenwe.

Nigeria: Nnadozie; Alozie, Demehin, Ohale, Oladipo; Abiodun, Ucheibe; Payne, Ajibade, Kanu; Oshoala.

Final Score Prediction

Both teams suffered narrow quarter-final defeats and arrive with the aim of keeping their World Cup dreams alive.

South Africa have the confidence of knowing they pushed hosts Morocco all the way, while Kgatlana's goal demonstrated that Banyana still possess the attacking quality to hurt elite opposition.

Nigeria, however, should take encouragement from their performance against Cameroon. The Super Falcons created enough chances to win the game and were unfortunate not to score. If they can improve their finishing, they have enough quality to cause South Africa serious problems.

This should therefore be a tense and closely fought encounter, but Nigeria's greater attacking depth could ultimately make the difference.

Prediction: South Africa 1-2 Nigeria.

A victory would not send Nigeria directly to the 2027 Women's World Cup, but it would keep the Super Falcons' qualification campaign alive by securing a place in the inter-confederation play-offs.
