We haven’t received the $100k promised by the Government – Super Falcons’ Ajibade

Captain of the Super Falcons of Nigeria Rasheedat Ajibade has revealed that the government has yet to pay them the royalties promised for their WAFCON 2024 triumph, Soccernet.ng reports.

Justin Madugu's side did the unthinkable in the competition's final against Morocco, overturning a first-half two-goal deficit to secure a 3-2 win.

Ajibade was the WAFCON 2024 Player of the Tournament and gave a speech during the trophy unveiling with Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, urging the NFF to invest in facilities that would help elevate the level of football to a higher standard, enabling the Super Falcons to compete on the World Stage.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) awarded Nigeria’s Super Falcons $1,000,000 for winning the 2024 WAFCON, doubling the $500,000 awarded to the WAFCON 2022 winner.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu then announced that each player will receive $100,000 (in Naira equivalent, approximately ₦153 million), while 11 technical crew members will receive $50,000 (~₦75.6 million).

All players and staff were conferred with the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON), and each team member was also given a furnished 3-bedroom apartment in the “Renewed Hope” housing estate.

Additionally, the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, led by Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, announced ₦10 million in cash to each team member (players and staff).

However, the Super Falcons captain has come out to clear the air, stating that none of the promises made by the Nigerian government have been fulfilled.

“We have not received our money. They haven't delivered it. They will pay,” the former Atletico Madrid midfielder said in an interview with Chude.

All the promises we've been hearing, none have been fulfilled, so people should know, but hopefully soon. When they pay, it'll be out there. Even our match bonuses and everything, it's still a work in progress.”

While Nigerians will be hoping the 10-time African Champions get paid their dues soon, Ajibade wouldn't be the first Nigerian footballer to cry out about delayed payments.

Former Super Eagles and Chelsea midfielder John Mikel Obi previously mentioned that he funded the flight for the Nigerian Olympic football team to Brazil in 2016 due to the ineptitude of the Nigerian Football Federation.
