Soccernet.ng can exclusively confirm that the Super Eagles of Nigeria have named their provisional squad for next month’s crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and South Africa.
Teenage goalkeeper Ebenezer Harcourt who recently made history during the 2024 CHAN tournament, has also earned his first senior call-up.
Harcourt, who impressed on his CHAN 2024 debut against Congo, has now been rewarded with a spot in the senior team as the Eagles regroup for a decisive international window.
Head coach Eric Chelle also recalled Akor Adams , Benjamin Frederick, Chidozie Awaziem and Terem Moffi, to bolster his options in attack and defence.
However, no Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) player made the list, with the coach sticking largely to foreign-based professionals.
When Will Super Eagles Camp Open?
The squad will open camp in Uyo on 1 September, ahead of their must-win clash against Rwanda on 6 September at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.
Three days later, they face group leaders South Africa in a high-stakes battle at the Toyota Stadium, Bloemfontein.
Nigeria currently sits fourth in Group C with seven points, behind South Africa (13), Rwanda (8) and Benin (8). Only the group winner qualifies automatically for the World Cup, while the second-placed team may be forced into a playoff route.
Chelle on Must Win World Cup Qualifiers:
As earlier reported by Soccernet.ng, Chelle revealed the importance of the upcoming matches against South Africa, and Rwanda which would bring pride to the nation ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
“It’s an obligation we win in South Africa, but the most important match for us right now is Rwanda in Uyo. South Africa are a good side, but for that game, we cannot afford to allow them play. But first, we have to beat Rwanda at home and then we will focus on the game in South Africa.” he said.
The Super Eagles revived their campaign earlier in March with Victor Osimhen’s brace in a 2–0 win over Rwanda in Kigali, but a subsequent 1–1 draw against Zimbabwe in Uyo kept their qualification hopes hanging by a thread.
Nigeria’s squad will be under pressure to deliver back-to-back victories to keep their 2026 World Cup dream alive with Harcourt, Adams, Awaziem looking to make the final list.
