Nigeria's Super Eagles produced one of the most extraordinary comebacks of Eric Chelle's tenure on Tuesday in their international friendly match against Russia.

The three-time African champions clawed their way back from 3-1 down to draw 3-3 with Russia at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium.

Kelechi Iheanacho gave the Super Eagles a dream start after only 10 minutes, drilling a left-footed effort beyond Aleksandr Maksimenko after Abdullahi Bewene's assist.

The early goal appeared to settle Nigeria, but Russia gradually seized control. Lechi Sadulaev levelled in the 30th minute before Matvey Kislyak struck in first-half stoppage time to turn the game on its head.

Alexey Miranchuk then appeared to have delivered the decisive blow in the 54th minute, extending Russia's advantage to 3-1 and exposing some of the defensive problems that had haunted Nigeria during their 3-0 defeat by Guinea-Bissau in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Yet Nigeria refused to fold. Peter Edokpolor reduced the deficit in the 78th minute on his senior international debut, giving the Super Eagles a lifeline.

Then, deep into stoppage time, Akor Adams finished a counter-attack in the 90+4th minute to complete a stunning rescue mission and preserve a 3-3 draw.

Super Eagles takeaways vs Russia

1. Nigeria showed the character Chelle needed

The reaction to Guinea-Bissau may not be as emphatic as Chelle would want but there are several positives attached to it.

Nigeria had been embarrassed 3-0 in Bissau only a week earlier, but there was no repeat of that collapse in Nizhny Novgorod. Even after Russia moved two goals clear, Chelle's players kept attacking, kept running and kept believing.

Chelle had entered the match under pressure to provide a response after Nigeria's mixed start to the 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign, which began with a 2-1 victory over Madagascar before the defeat in Guinea-Bissau.

A 3-3 draw against a Russia side that had recently thrashed Namibia 6-0 does not erase the problems in Bissau, but the comeback showed that Nigeria can still summon considerable fight when the match begins to slip away.

2. Iheanacho's return could be too good to ignore

Kelechi Iheanacho could hardly have written a better script for his national team return.

The Bursaspor forward had not played for Nigeria since the 2025 Unity Cup final against Jamaica, while his last international goal had come against Zimbabwe in November 2023. His strike against Russia therefore ended a wait of almost three years.

More importantly, the goal looked like the work of a striker playing with confidence. Iheanacho has been prolific for Bursaspor this season, scoring 11 goals in his first nine appearances before the Russia fixture.

After being snubbed for Nigeria's AFCON qualifying squad, Iheanacho's performance has given the coach another selection question to answer.

The “Senior Man” has made his case in the most direct language available to a forward and that's with goals.

3. Chelle's changes changed the night

At 3-1 down, Nigeria needed belief, urgency and efficiency in Nizhny Novgorod. Chelle's substitutions injected precisely that.

Akor Adams came on at half-time, while Abdullahi Umar, Peter Edokpolor and Umar Abubakar were introduced as Nigeria searched for a route back into the contest.

Edokpolor's 78th-minute goal transformed the mood of the game. Nigeria suddenly had something tangible to chase, and the pressure on Russia increased.

Adams then delivered the final blow in the fourth minute of added time, finishing a counter-attack that began with Emmanuel Fernandez and was assisted by Abdullahi Umar.

The comeback also spared Chelle the unwanted distinction of suffering consecutive defeats with the senior Super Eagles after the Guinea-Bissau setback.

4. Three goals conceded again exposes a serious problem

The attacking recovery should not disguise the defensive alarm for Chelle and his Super Eagles, though.

Nigeria conceded three times against Russia after allowing Guinea-Bissau to score three in Bissau. Sadulaev's equaliser exposed space around the Nigerian defence, Kislyak found room to put Russia ahead just before half-time, and Miranchuk punished another lapse nine minutes after the restart.

Samuel James, making his senior international debut in goal, was called into action repeatedly and made important saves before Russia eventually breached him three times.

There were encouraging moments from Isaac James, Emmanuel Fernandez and Abdullahi Bewene, but Russia repeatedly found avenues through Nigeria's defensive shape.

Chelle can celebrate the comeback while knowing that conceding six goals across two matches is a problem that cannot be brushed aside.

5. The new boys gave Chelle plenty to think about

This was supposed to be an audition, and several of the unfamiliar names took advantage. A total of nine players made their Super Eagles debut.

Samuel James was tested heavily on his debut but did not look overwhelmed by the occasion. Isaac James offered flashes of the quality that earned him a call-up after impressing with Alverca.

Edokpolor, however, stole the show. The Benfica attacker came off the bench to score on his senior debut, giving Nigeria the momentum needed to launch the final assault.

Abdullahi Umar also played a decisive role, supplying the assist for Adams' dramatic equaliser, while Abubakar Umar provided energy in attack. Igor Wilfred and Stephen Michael worked tirelessly in midfield during a demanding evening against a Russian side that had entered the match in rich scoring form.

Chelle wanted information from this friendly. He got plenty of it. The 3-3 draw offered Nigeria relief after Bissau, but it also handed the coach a fresh batch of selection headaches ahead of the Super Eagles' next competitive assignment in November.
