Brighton & Hove Albion Women rolled out the red carpet on Thursday as they officially welcomed Nigeria’s Chiamaka Nnadozie to the south coast following her remarkable exploits at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), Soccernet.ng reports.

The 24-year-old goalkeeper, who joined the Women’s Super League side this summer after seeing out her contract with Paris FC, arrived later than her fellow summer signings due to national team duties.

Her absence was for good reason, though, as she played a pivotal role in helping the Super Falcons secure a record-extending 10th continental title.

Nnadozie’s excellent performances in Morocco confirmed her status as the finest shot-stopper on the continent and one of the best on the planet.

The former Rivers Angels goalie kept four clean sheets, conceded just twice in open play in the tournament, and was named Best Goalkeeper while earning a place in the Team of the Tournament.

Nnadozie's displays also saw her shortlisted for the prestigious Yachine Trophy, the award for the world’s best women’s goalkeeper.

The Nigerian goalkeeper will battle for the top honour alongside Ann-Katrin Berger, Cata Coll, Hannah Hampton, and Daphne van Domselaar.

When she finally stepped into Brighton’s dressing room, she was greeted with applause, and a standing ovation from players and staff. Head coach Dario Vidosic wasted no time in lauding her achievements.

Nnadozie joins Brighton as the first Nigerian goalkeeper to grace the English Women’s Super League.

What was said of Chiamaka Nnadozie?

“Firstly it’s important to say welcome and secondly, congratulations on a fantastic achievement to become champions of Africa, hopefully with us we can also win some silverware,” Vidosic said.

“Also, congratulations on the nomination for the goalkeeper of the year, hopefully that’s another award that will come your way. Everyone’s excited for you to be here. We’ve introduced two other girls today so now we’ve got three new ones to join us.

“I’m sure everyone is really excited, we wish you all the best and we look forward to you putting on the Brighton gear.”

The honours keep piling up for the Super Falcons star, who in addition to her international medal haul was recently awarded the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger, a $100,000 cash prize, and a three-bedroom apartment in Abuja’s Renewed Hope Estate.

Her career silverware already spans titles in Nigeria and France, alongside multiple CAF, IFFHS, and league individual awards.
