Tinubu showers Super Falcons with national honours, cash awards and homes after WAFCON triumph

President Bola Tinubu has rewarded Nigeria’s triumphant Super Falcons with national honours, cash gifts, and housing after their historic comeback victory in the final of the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The Falcons returned to the country around noon on Monday barely 48 hours after beating all oppositions to the WAFCON trophy. Shortly after, the team, led by the President of the Nigeria Football Federation Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau, were transported to the Presidential Villa.

The President hosted the 10-time African champions at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday and commended their fighting spirit after they overturned a two-goal deficit to defeat Morocco 3-2 in Rabat.

The reception was held at the Banquet Hall, where the players were received with applause and celebrated by the nation’s top officials.

As a mark of national recognition, Tinubu conferred the prestigious Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) on all 24 players. He also announced a monetary reward of $100,000 (players to receive equivalent value in naira) for each player and $50,000 for each member of the technical crew.

In addition, the President gifted every member of the squad a three-bedroom apartment located within the Renewed Hope Estate in the Federal Capital Territory.

Leading the squad during the courtesy visit were team captain and tournament MVP Rasheedat Ajibade and goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, who presented the trophy to the President and First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu.

The celebration continued with traditional music and cultural displays.

The Nigeria Governors Forum also joined in the celebrations, pledging ₦10 million to each player, amounting to ₦360 million in total.

The comeback win in Morocco is Nigeria’s 10th WAFCON title and the country's first since 2018.

Goals from Esther Okoronkwo, Folashade Ijamilusi, and Jennifer Echegini completed a stunning second-half turnaround against the Atlas Lionesses after the Falcons had conceded twice in the opening 25 minutes.

Nigeria have now claimed WAFCON trophies in the last decade, with the latest triumph coming alongside a $1 million prize money – the biggest in the history of the competition.
