Nigeria’s Super Falcons touched down in Abuja to a hero’s welcome on Monday afternoon, basking in the glory of their historic Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) 2024 triumph in Morocco.

The squad returned aboard a Value Jet aircraft, less than 48 hours after securing their 10th continental crown with a thrilling 3-2 comeback win over host nation Morocco in the final.

Captain Rasheedat Ajibade, who was named Player of the Tournament, led her teammates off the plane with the iconic WAFCON trophy in hand.

The victory in Rabat on Saturday night capped a flawless campaign for the Super Falcons.

Nigeria went unbeaten throughout the tournament. They opened their group stage with a commanding 3-0 win over Tunisia, edged past Botswana 1-0, and were held to a goalless draw by Algeria.

In the knockout stages, the Falcons raised their game to another level, thrashing Zambia 5-0 in the quarter-finals before eliminating defending champions South Africa 2-1 in a tense semi-final clash.

The final itself was a tale of two halves.

Morocco stunned the Nigerians with two early goals in the first 25 minutes. But the second half saw a stunning turnaround. Esther Okoronkwo pulled one back from the spot, Folashade Ijamilusi equalised, and Jennifer Echegini completed the comeback, sealing a dramatic and emotional win for Nigeria.

This latest title is Nigeria’s first WAFCON crown since 2018 and ends a brief reign by South Africa, who dethroned the Falcons in 2022.

With the trophy now back on Nigerian soil, the team is set for a presidential reception at the State House in Abuja.

President Bola Tinubu, who publicly congratulated the team after their win, is expected to honour them with gifts and awards.

Given the precedent set after the Super Eagles' second-place finish at AFCON 2023 — where each squad member received a national honour and property in Abuja — the Super Falcons could be in line for similar recognition.
