Exclusive: AC Milan could push Leverkusen for loan fee waiver as Boniface’s medical sparks doubt

Soccernet.ng can exclusively report that Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface’s proposed switch to AC Milan from Bayer Leverkusen has taken another turn following the result of his medical examination.

Multiple reports have revealed that the Nigerian international is faced with medical concerns that could force Rossoneri to reconsider the terms of the deal.

The 24-year-old arrived in Milan on Friday to undergo routine medical checks ahead of a season-long loan move worth €5 million, with an option to buy for around €30m.

But what was expected to be a straightforward unveiling—complete with the iconic No. 22 shirt lined up for him at Casa Milan—has now been thrown into uncertainty.

The Medical Red Flag

According to Italian journalist Marco Guidi of Gazzetta dello Sport, AC Milan doctors identified an issue with Boniface’s right knee during examinations.

“Well, it’s true that AC Milan found some problems during the medical exams with Boniface. The issue is his right knee, which is not 100% fit,” Guidi told Soccernet.ng.

The findings have left Milan hesitant to finalise the deal, with a final verdict expected after their Serie A clash against Cremonese.

Milan’s New Strategy

Guidi further revealed that Milan may seek to renegotiate the terms of the agreement with Leverkusen in order to minimise their risk.

“One possible solution could be to ask Bayer Leverkusen to lower the loan fee. In fact, the loan could even become free, meaning Boniface would stay in Milan and play for AC Milan at no cost to the club. But of course, this depends on Leverkusen as well,” he explained.

The revelation confirms earlier concerns raised by Milan’s medical team, who had ordered additional tests at the Galeazzi Orthopaedic Institute due to Boniface’s history of two anterior cruciate ligament surgeries and recurring groin issues.

What Happens Next For Victor Boniface?

While Nigerian journalist Buchi Laba insisted Boniface passed his medicals after three rounds of checks, transfer insider Sacha Tavolieri suggested the new scans had dampened Milan’s enthusiasm.

Renowned reporter Fabrizio Romano also noted the club would wait for their orthopaedic team’s final assessment before giving the green light.

For now, Boniface’s Milan dream hangs in the balance. Should the Rossoneri push ahead, the Nigerian could follow in the footsteps of Brazilian great Kaka in donning the No. 22 shirt at San Siro.

But if Leverkusen refuses to budge on the financial terms—or if Milan’s medical team rules against the move—the forward may yet return to Germany to continue his Bundesliga journey.
