Super Falcons tackle Morocco in WAFCON final: Nigeria’s history with host nations in 17 months

Super Falcons of Nigeria are slated to take on tournament hosts Morocco in the final of the 2024 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) tournament, Soccernet.ng reports.

The 13th edition of the tournament is expected to take place at Rabat’s Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium (also known as the Olympic Stadium), with kickoff at 9:00 p.m. local time.

It's the second time in just 17 months that a Nigerian national team has faced a host nation in a major continental final.

Nigeria's 2023 AFCON campaign halted by the host Nation

The Super Eagles of Nigeria locked horns with the Ivory Coast at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium in Abidjan with the continent's biggest football prize on the line.

Just like the Super Falcons, Nigeria arrived at the tournament's final as the favourites following their excellent unbeaten run from the group stage.

The three-time winners came from a goal deficit to earn a 1-1 draw against Equatorial Guinea on matchday one.

Fast forward to when South Africa dragged Nigeria to a penalty shootout in the semifinals. Still, goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali and Leicester City forward Kelechi Iheanacho combined to send the Super Eagles to their first AFCON final since 2013.

Although Justin Magudu's girls did not need a penalty as a decider, thanks to an eye-widening cross-cum-floater goal by Houston Dash star Michelle Alozie.

In the final, Nigeria's “Let's do it again” campaign was dented by a goal from Franck Kessie and Sebastien Haller to hand the host nation their third.

Nigeria vs Morocco: Super Falcons Face Host Nations

While the Super Falcons have long been the queens of African football, they’ve had their own trials against host nations.

The most notable recent encounter came during WAFCON 2022, also in Morocco. Then, Nigeria met the hosts in the semi-final, and despite battling to a draw during regulation and extra time, the Falcons lost on penalties.

Meanwhile, this time, Nigeria must be wary of the last defeat, knowing at the back of their minds that crowd energy and officiating can often tilt in favour of the hosts.

WAFCON 2024: Super Falcons vs. Morocco—The Rematch

This year, It’s the final. It’s in Rabat. And it’s against a Moroccan side that has grown in quality over the last few years.

Earlier, head coach Justin Madugu had assured Nigerians that the Falcons are mentally prepared for the clash.

“We knew South Africa, as Cup holders, would be difficult but we were ready for them. I am glad that our tactics paid off… We will do the same in the final,” Madugu said after the semi-final win.

Nigeria defeated reigning champions South Africa to set up this blockbuster clash. The same pathway—beating Southern Africans en route to facing the hosts—mirrors the Super Eagles’ AFCON run earlier last year.

Can Nigeria Tame the Lionesses in Rabat?

While Morocco is looking to lean on the home crowd's energy, Magudu and the Falcons are looking to avoid a déjà vu by clipping the claws of the Lionesses.

Having lost no game, tallying 11 goals for and one against—a penalty scored by Linda Motlhalo as the Banyana played their socks off against the Super Falcons—they go to Rabat with the confidence of completing their “Mission X”
