The Super Eagles winger once came close to joining Anfield giants Liverpool and now he could be set for a rebirth at Sevilla

Nigerian winger Chidera Ejuke may be set for a tactical reshuffle at Sevilla as the Spanish club continues their preparations ahead of the 2025-26 season.

According to Spanish outlet Diarios AS, new Sevilla manager Matías Almeyda has trialled former CSKA Moscow man Ejuke on the right flank during pre-season preparations.

Traditionally a left winger known for his explosive dribbling and close control, Ejuke is facing stiff competition on his preferred side of the pitch.

The Andalusian club boasts considerable depth on the left, with Rubén Vargas and promising new signing Alfon also vying for minutes.

That congestion has prompted Almeyda, who favours pace and width in his system, to consider relocating Ejuke to the right in a bid to exploit his versatility and reduce the positional bottleneck.

The move comes at a time when Belgian international Dodi Lukebakio, Sevilla’s first-choice right winger last term, is the subject of transfer interest. The club may be tempted to cash in on the 26-year-old as they look to bolster their finances. In the event of a sale, Ejuke could emerge as a natural replacement.

Ejuke, 26, joined Sevilla last summer on a free transfer after unilaterally terminating his contract with CSKA Moscow amid the conflict in Russia.

He impressed early on, offering a direct threat down the left and contributing to several important attacking plays.

However, a muscle injury sustained during a clash with Barcelona at the Olympic Stadium in Montjuïc derailed his momentum. Though he returned before the season’s end, he struggled to rediscover his rhythm.

Last season, the Super Eagles star featured in 25 La Liga matches, scoring twice and providing one assist. Those numbers fell short of expectations following his more productive stint at Royal Antwerp in Belgium, where he netted four goals and assisted four more in 29 appearances. Prior to that, he had five goals and four assists in 30 league games with CSKA.

Formerly on the books of Dutch club Heerenveen, Ejuke once trialled at Liverpool but failed to secure a move.

This summer, Ejuke has been involved in both of Sevilla’s pre-season friendlies, starting against Sunderland in a 1-1 draw and featuring in a 3-1 defeat to Birmingham. His performances on the right have drawn cautious optimism, giving Almeyda another tactical card to play ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

Ejuke is one of three Nigerian stars at Sevilla, with Akor Adams and Kelechi Iheanacho – presently eyeing the exit door – also on the club's payroll.
