The former Super Eagles star, after years in Europe with clubs in Slovenia, Portugal, Spain, and Israel, is set to move to NPFL side Rivers United…

Former Nigeria international John Ogu is on the verge of sealing a move to Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) club Rivers United, Soccernet.ng reports.

The experienced midfielder, who earned 26 caps for the Super Eagles, is set to make a return to Nigerian football after over a decade plying his trade abroad.

Ogu began his football journey in Nigeria with Akwa Starlets, Akwa United, and Flying Sports Academy before launching his professional career in Europe. In 2006, he signed for Slovenian side Drava Ptuj, where he spent four years, scoring eight goals in 97 appearances.

In 2010, the 36-year-old moved to Portugal to join Atlético Clube de Portugal. He later had brief spells with Almería B in Spain and Leiria in Portugal before establishing himself in Israel with Hapoel Be'er Sheva, where he enjoyed the most successful stint of his club career.

Ogu was first called up to the Super Eagles in March 2013 and made his debut in a 1–1 draw against Kenya during a 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifier. He scored his first international goal on 31 May 2013 in a friendly against Mexico in Houston.

If confirmed, Ogu’s move to Rivers United will bolster the Port Harcourt-based club’s midfield options ahead of the new NPFL season and their CAF Confederation Cup campaign.
