Super Falcons forward Chioma Okafor has revealed her plans for her professional career after winning the WAFCON 2024 title with Nigeria, Soccernet.ng reports.

The 22-year-old was born to a Nigerian father and a Malawian mother but opted to represent Nigeria, declining Malawi's invitation.

While Okafor isn't a professional footballer yet, she is already an African champion with the Nigerian Women's team, although she didn't play a minute of the competition in Morocco.

Why Chioma Okafor chose to play for Nigeria

Although she wasn't involved on the pitch, the attacker is coming to terms with what it means to be Nigerian and appreciates the support of her teammates, who helped her settle in.

“They are amazing. Since the first day I stepped into camp, they've been very welcoming. It's like I have 23 elder sisters who take care of me. They watch out for me as well, so I can't thank them enough,” Okafor mentioned in an interview with Ademola Victor.

“Playing for Nigeria wasn't an easy decision. I took the time to evaluate my choices, and I found myself in a place where I didn't want to make easy choices that I often tend to make.

“I also needed exposure as I wanted to play with people far better than me, to be in a very competitive environment, and that's a constant with the Super Falcons.

“None of my parents influenced my choice. They respected the decision, and I take all responsibility for it.”

If ever there were any doubts about her decision to represent Nigeria, it was quelled after she lifted the trophy at the Stade Olympique de Rabat last night.

“I made the right choice, I know. I'm just happy, I'm ecstatic. As a group, we're about to have more fun.

“It's also humbling. I'm just glad that we won. My mother was happy as well, she was dancing, and I hope we see more of those. I'm grateful for all the support,” she continued.

The victory dance started early!

Mrs. Patricia Okafor, mother of Chioma Okafor, brought the vibes and energy during the team’s morning session, lifting spirits ahead of today’s grand finale!

Plans after WAFCON

Okafor plays collegiate football for the University of Connecticut in the United States, also serving as a student in her final year. She's set her sights on playing pro football after her studies.

“I definitely want to play professionally. I haven't made a decision yet as to whether I want to play in the United States or if I want to go to Europe, but you know, as time goes on and offers begin to come in, then I'll make the decision.

“Now, I'm just focused on my studies and finishing my final year at the university,” the youngster concluded.
