Transfer: Semi Ajayi signs for Jay Jay Okocha’s former club

Jay Jay Okocha's former club, Hull City, have secured the services of Super Eagles defender, Semi Ajayi, on a two-year deal, Soccernet.ng reports.

The 31-year-old has clocked up 200 appearances in the EFL Championship over an extensive career, with Rotherham and West Bromwich Albion, from whom he was released last month.

Ajayi's hamstring injuries last season saw him restricted to just 14 starts for the Baggies, with three of those coming since the beginning of November.

In an official statement on Hull City's website, the three-time EFL League One winners announced the signature of the 43-cap Super Eagle on a two-year deal, with the club having the option to extend for another year.

Hull finished just outside the relegation spot in the EFL Championship, having the goal difference advantage over Luton Town, who suffered ill-fated demotion for two successive seasons.

Ajayi revealed his excitement at the opportunity afforded him by Hull City, and talked up the club's expectation of returning to the top again.

“I’m really excited. I spoke to the sporting director (Jared Dublin) and head of recruitment (Martin Hodge), and they sold me on the vision of the club and the plans for this season.

“The club wants to challenge at the top end of the league, and that’s where I see myself challenging. When I heard the vision, I couldn’t wait to get involved in the project.

“I feel I can bring Championship know-how, experience and leadership. I am comfortable on the ball, good in the air, and my pace is an asset Jared and Martin spoke highly of,” the former Arsenal centre-back told Hull's official website.

“We all know how tough the Championship is, and I can’t wait to bring some of my experience to the group.

“I had a really good six years at West Brom, but it’s exciting to have a new challenge now. I’m coming in with a lot of hunger to prove myself again and do as well as I can as a Hull City player,” the 2023 AFCON finalist concluded.

Semi Ajayi was instrumental in Nigeria's 2025 Unity Cup triumph. In 177 games for West Brom, the lanky defender scored 13 goals and provided three assists.
