Promoted: Nigerian wonderkid steals the show as Club Brugge plot surprise exit for Ecuadorian defender

Nigerian teen sensation Vince Osuji is on the verge of a major breakthrough at Club Brugge, with the Belgian giants preparing to offload Ecuadorian defender Joel Ordoñez to create space in the first-team squad, Soccernet.ng reports.

The 18-year-old centre-back joined Club Brugge in January 2025 from Swedish side Kalmar FF for a reported €3 million, potentially rising to €4 million.

Though signed with minimal fanfare, Osuji has quickly made a name for himself with a standout performance in the club’s first pre-season fixture — a 2-0 win over KV Kortrijk — where he scored both goals, despite being deployed in midfield.

His first strike came in the 27th minute after Jorne Spileers' cross hit the post and fell kindly for Osuji to bury the rebound. He added his second with a classy lob over the goalkeeper just before half-time, capitalising on a defensive error.

Osuji’s impact has reportedly convinced Club Brugge to count on him as a full member of the A-core squad for the upcoming season.

Belgian daily Het Nieuwsblad described the January move as “a smart deal,” praising the club for quietly bedding the Nigerian in with their developmental team, Club NXT, before easing him into the top-level setup.

Meanwhile, 21-year-old Ecuadorian centre-back Joel Ordoñez appears to be the casualty of Osuji’s meteoric rise.

Ordoñez joined Club Brugge in 2022 from Independiente del Valle but has struggled to cement a regular starting place. With Osuji now favoured, the club is expected to sanction Ordoñez’s departure for a substantial fee this summer, according to Voetbalprimeur.

Osuji's path to Belgium has been remarkable.

Having developed at Nigeria’s Cardinal Football Academy, he moved to Sweden in early 2024 to join Kalmar FF.

Despite visa issues scuppering a proposed move to KRC Genk, Osuji impressed in the Allsvenskan — even scoring against Malmö FF — and was reportedly tracked by at least nine European clubs before settling on Brugge.

Now firmly part of Club Brugge’s plans, Osuji is seen as a long-term asset with the potential to become a defensive mainstay.
