Grit, class, and a few concerns: 5 big takeaways from Nigeria Super Falcons’ impressive draw vs Portugal

Nigeria Super Falcons

Against all odds — and fresh off a gruelling transcontinental journey that left them barely 18 hours to prepare — Nigeria’s Super Falcons walked into Lisbon and earned a hard-fought 0-0 draw against Portugal, a team 14 places above them in the FIFA rankings.

It was more than just a scoreless stalemate. It was a powerful reminder that, even when tired and under-prepared, Nigeria’s women can dig deep and deliver performances of real substance.

The hosts dominated large spells of possession and tested the Nigerians throughout. Yet it was the Falcons who left Estádio José Gomes with their heads held highest, thanks to an inspired goalkeeping display, flashes of attacking threat, and a midfield performance packed with grit and industry.

Here are five key takeaways from the game:

1. Chiamaka Nnadozie is one of the world’s finest — full stop

There are good goalkeepers, and then there is Chiamaka Nnadozie. At just 24, she continues to grow into one of the best in the world and Monday’s performance was further evidence.

The ex-Paris FC star made at least seven crucial saves, many of them point-blank stops that kept Nigeria in the contest.

What stood out just as much was her command of the box and calmness with the ball at her feet. In a high-pressure match where Portugal kept coming, Nnadozie was the difference between a morale-boosting draw and a confidence-sapping defeat.

2. Nigeria’s travel troubles were obvious—and avoidable

Let’s be honest: it was clear the Super Falcons had heavy legs. They only arrived in Lisbon from Morocco late Sunday night due to avoidable administrative failings. Playing elite opposition less than a day later is asking for trouble — and it showed.

Players went down with knocks late in the game, and the entire team faded in intensity as the match wore on. This isn’t just about travel fatigue, it’s about basic planning. Somebody at the Nigeria Football Federation should be held accountable. Preparing elite athletes like this isn’t just amateurish — it’s dangerous.

3. Christy Ucheibe: The engine Nigeria can’t do without

In a midfield battle where Nigeria were second-best for long stretches, Christy Ucheibe stood out like a lighthouse in a storm. The SL Benfica midfielder was everywhere — pressing, intercepting, tackling, and constantly linking play.

Her positioning was excellent, and her ability to read the game made her Nigeria’s midfield metronome. If she stays fit and in this form, Nigeria’s WAFCON ambitions suddenly look a lot more realistic. Ucheibe is no longer a prospect, she’s the heartbeat of this team.

4. Ordega’s return is a revelation

Francisca Ordega’s recall raised eyebrows, especially after being frozen out under Randy Waldrum. But against Portugal, she rolled back the years. Her energy was infectious, her movement sharp, and her decision-making top-class.

She came closest to scoring, smashing the crossbar with a wicked long-range effort, and later created what should have been the winning moment for Ifeoma Onumonu. At 30, Ordega showed she still has a big role to play. Coach Justin Madugu’s decision to bring her back already looks inspired.

5. Defence solid, midfield reliable, but Nigeria still need a clinical No.9

For all of Nigeria’s defensive solidity and midfield resilience, the team still lacks one crucial ingredient: a reliable, prolific striker. Asisat Oshoala remains a high-profile name, and Onumonu can be handy but neither looks capable of leading the line with consistent end-product at international level.

With Ordega and Rasheedat Ajibade creating chances and Ucheibe winning battles, the Falcons had openings against Portugal. A true finisher could have snatched all three points. The decision to leave Joy Omewa, the Danish league’s top scorer, at home feels questionable. It’s a gamble that may haunt Nigeria when the WAFCON begins.

Soccernet.ng's verdict

This goalless draw may not make global headlines, but for the Super Falcons, it was a spirited reminder of what’s possible even when the odds are stacked. With stars like Nnadozie, Ucheibe, and Ordega firing, Nigeria can dream of a 10th WAFCON title.

But unless the cracks in planning — and the finishing — are urgently addressed, dreams could easily turn to regrets in Morocco next month.

Thank you for the analysis, I agree with you that neither Onumonu nor Assisat Oshoala are the best 9 we have Imade Edna and Joy Omewa should be considered strongly after the WAFCON.
Ordega performance will help in resetting critics of “old” players in national teams this will lead to future objective analysis of players based on performance and not on how long they have been in the national team.
Ordega inspite her age was the fastest and smartest in that match, and did you see how arm chair critics “finished” local coaches, NFF and the players?
Let Oshoala Assisat follow Ordega’s foot steps
