Benfica star predicts Nigeria will beat South Africa to WAFCON glory

Nigeria’s Super Falcons

Nigeria international and SL Benfica star Christy Ucheibe is confident the Super Falcons will reclaim the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) crown from holders South Africa, Soccernet.ng reports.

As the 2025 WAFCON kicks off in Morocco on July 5, anticipation is building around Nigeria’s quest for a record-extending 10th continental title.

Nigeria are the most successful nation in the history of the competition with nine titles but the Super Falcons were left chasing shadows in 2022 when South Africa claimed the trophy for the first time ever.

The Bayana Bayana are aiming to become the first team other than Nigeria to win the WAFCON trophy back-to-back.

What Nigeria’s Ucheibe said of South Africa’s challenge

Speaking to Pulse Sports Nigeria, Ucheibe addressed the growing confidence from South Africa’s camp.

“We’re the Super Falcons of Nigeria, we are the best in Africa. Ours is just to go there and do our thing as usual,” Ucheibe said.

“Yeah, they are the defending champions but this time it is a different ball game and everyone is going there to compete, and I know by the end of the day and by the grace of God, we will come back victorious.”

Ucheibe, 24, who starred at the 2022 FIFA Women’s World Cup and recently helped Benfica clinch their fifth consecutive Liga BPI title, is expected to play a pivotal role in Justin Madugu’s side.

Backing her teammate’s optimism is Deborah Abiodun, one of the youngest players in the Super Falcons squad.

Abiodun featured in Nigeria’s final pre-tournament warm-up match, a commanding 3-1 win over Ghana in Casablanca.

Reflecting on that result, Abiodun told NFF TV:

“It was a good training match, especially against a team like Ghana, who bring the physicality, and I think it’s very good for the team. It’s really good for us that we won.

“This is a step toward achieving our aim in this competition. We want to keep winning until we reach our goal.”

The Falcons impressed throughout the match, displaying both flair and tactical discipline. Goals from Chiwendu Ihezuo, Rasheedat Ajibade and former Barcelona star Asisat Oshoala sealed an emphatic victory.

Coach Justin Madugu used the clash to fine-tune his tactical approach and assess player readiness. With a blend of experience and youth, his side looked sharp, hungry, and ready for what lies ahead.

The win over Ghana also served as a psychological boost, especially with the tournament opener against Tunisia fast approaching.

Nigeria’s nine-time champions, with their eyes firmly on a record 10th title — an adventure dubbed Mission X — will be aiming to dominate from the first whistle.

Nigeria will open their campaign in Group B on July 6 woth the Super Falcons billed to face Tunisia, Algeria, and Botswana.

If you're feeling confident in the Super Falcons' chances, you can bet on women's football in Nigeria and back them to conquer Africa once again.
