“The Super Falcons will win” – Nigeria backed to beat South Africa, Zambia, Morocco to WAFCON title

Nigeria Super Falcons

Former Nigeria international Stella Mbachu has expressed strong confidence in the Super Falcons’ ability to reclaim the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title in Morocco, Soccernet.ng reports.

The nine-time African champions begin their campaign this week as favourites, but will face stiff competition from defending champions South Africa, 2022 runners-up Morocco, and a rejuvenated Zambia side led by star forwards Barbra Banda and Racheal Kundananji.

Despite the high level of opposition, Mbachu, a veteran of the women’s game with 89 caps and 20 goals for Nigeria, is unshaken in her belief that the current squad has enough quality and experience to triumph on the continent once again.

Speaking on Brila FM’s Sunday Sports, the former winger said:

“The Super Falcons will win every game at the WAFCON. They will not lose any game all in the tournament, you will see. They will come home with the trophy.”

Justin Madugu’s side has shown strong form heading into the tournament. On Sunday, Nigeria secured an impressive 3-1 win over long-time rivals Ghana in a friendly match played in Morocco. That result followed a gritty goalless draw against Portugal in Lisbon and a commanding 2-0 victory over Cameroon in Abeokuta.

With a blend of experienced campaigners and emerging talents, the Super Falcons appear well poised to reclaim the continental crown they last won in 2018.

Nigeria’s resilience against African opposition is also notable — the team has not suffered a defeat to an African side in over three years, further bolstering hopes of another successful WAFCON outing.

Tournament hosts Morocco, who knocked Nigeria out in the 2022 semi-final and are aiming for a first title, will be one to watch. South Africa, who won that edition, remain a strong force, while Zambia’s attacking flair adds another layer of intrigue.

But for Mbachu, there's no question about who will come out on top.
