Werder Bremen boss Ole Werner has hailed Felix Agu’s development and international recognition, as the full-back prepares for his first appearance for the Nigerian national team, Soccernet.ng reports.

Felix Agu, 25, has already linked up with the Super Eagles in London this week for the Unity Cup, where Nigeria will face Ghana and either Jamaica, or Trinidad & Tobago.

Although he was initially not expected to feature in the matches, the former Germany youth international has been cleared to make his debut for Nigeria.

Werner, Agu's club boss, has backed the fullback to get even better following his international exposure.

“All experiences that players can have in their careers that go beyond club football are fantastic,” said Werner as per Deichstube.

“Felix has developed well and had a brilliant season. After a short injury break, he came back strongly and was a key part of our final spurt because he was in top form.”

The Osnabrück-born defender was left out of Bremen’s final friendly against OSC Bremerhaven as a precaution, in agreement with Werner, to ensure nothing disrupted his upcoming national team engagement.

Sporting director Clemens Fritz also welcomed Agu’s call-up, calling it “a nice recognition for his performance.”

But alongside this career milestone, Agu’s future at the Weserstadion remains a talking point.

According to DeichStube, a release clause in his contract — which runs until 2027 — allows him to leave the club for a fixed fee of €8-10 million. That clause, however, expires on May 31.

Interest has reportedly come in from both English and Bundesliga clubs, yet Agu is understood to be leaning towards staying at Bremen — for now. Should the clause lapse, any potential transfer fee would be subject to negotiation.

Despite the growing attention, Bremen are counting on Agu for the upcoming campaign.

“He's firmly in our plans for the coming season,” said Fritz.

With Derrick Köhn unable to displace him and Olivier Deman out on loan, Agu is expected to start 2025/26 as the club’s first-choice left-back.
