Chibuike Nwaiwu capped off a stunning debut season in Europe by helping Wolfsberger AC lift the Austrian Cup for the first time in the club’s history — and what a journey it has been for the Nigerian sensation, Soccernet.ng reports.

The 21-year-old former Enyimba striker turned centre-back played all 90 minutes in the 1-0 final win over TSV Hartberg at the 28 Black Arena.

A towering header from Angelo Gattermayer in the 77th minute sealed the triumph, sparking wild celebrations in Wolfsberg. But behind that moment of glory lies Nwaiwu’s own incredible transformation story.

Signed last summer from nine-time Nigeria Premier Football League champions Enyimba, where he won the league title two years ago, Nwaiwu arrived in Austria as a forward.

But in a bold tactical switch, Wolfsberger’s coaching staff converted him into a central defender — and he’s excelled ever since.

In the Austrian Cup, Nwaiwu was more than just dependable. He featured in every round, starting in defensive midfield in the round of 16 against Austria Klagenfurt — a dramatic tie settled 11-10 on penalties — and moving into central defence in later stages.

Remarkably, he still managed to score two goals in the competition, including a vital 83rd-minute equaliser against LASK in the semi-finals, before Wolfsberger won yet again via penalties.

His presence in the final was immense — calm on the ball, strong in the air, and alert throughout as Hartberg pushed for a late equaliser. This triumph is Nwaiwu's first European silverware, and also writes Wolfsberger AC into Austrian football folklore.

With the Cup win, Wolfsberger have now qualified for the UEFA Europa League third qualifying round — and, depending on other results, could still dream of reaching the UEFA Champions League.

Nwaiwu, who has also made 21 league appearances and scored twice this season, continues to impress in his new defensive role.

With four games remaining in the ADMIRAL Bundesliga Championship round, Wolfsberger are just three points behind joint-leaders Austria Vienna and Sturm Graz.

From Aba to Austria, Chibuike Nwaiwu’s rise has been nothing short of inspirational — a forward who’s found new purpose in defence, now a champion in Europe.
