Emmanuel Chukwu: Meet Nigeria’s defensive stalwart who aspires to be better than William Troost-Ekong

Emmanuel Chukwu has been one of the standout performers for Nigeria at the ongoing 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.

He has formed a sturdy partnership with Daniel Bameyi in the heart of Nigeria's defence, a partnership that has only let in two goals since the start of the Under-20 AFCON.

The Flying Eagles' solid defence has seen the team reach the semifinal of the competition after defeating defending champions Senegal on Monday. This also means that they have gained one of the four available tickets for the upcoming Under-20 World Cup.

Who is Emmanuel Chukwu?

Emmanuel Chukwu is an 18-year-old centre-back who is currently in the books of Bundesliga club Hoffenheim. Chukwu's preferred foot is his right, as he is not so good with his left.

In a recent interview on CAF TV, the youngster revealed how he started watching the Super Eagles from when he was a little child and how he was inspired to do big things with the team due to their defensive problems.

“I remember our game against Argentina. I watched the game as a young kid, and I remember I was very, very sad, because Argentina won us from behind,” Chukwu said.

“It was a dying-minute goal, but Nigeria is a great country, and we keep looking forward. I watched the game, and I learnt a lot from the defence, the mistakes, and I wanted to do much better than them in the national team.”

Who are Emmanuel Chukwu's role models?

Most young footballers hope to be great. They hope to reach the peak of their careers at international level and club level. And usually, they have senior colleagues whom they try to model their game after or look up to for inspiration.

For Emmanuel Chukwu, Super Eagles skipper William Troost-Ekong and Kenneth Omeruo are his favorites.

“I've been working towards it. I have a lot of football players who I admire. Mostly, I admire Troost-Ekong and Kenneth Omeruo,” Chukwu added.

“I do watch their games, most of their games against other countries. I do take time to watch their games and see a lot of them. I learn from them also.”

A firm believer in God, always focused on the sport

A lot of footballers have different beliefs. But most Nigerian ballers do not joke with their spirituality, and Chukwu is one of them.

The Flying Eagles star is a firm believer in God. He admits that he typically involves God whenever he is preparing for a game.

“What I do is, before a game, I wake up in the morning, say my prayers, most importantly, and then go for breakfast.

“Then, when I'm back from breakfast, I try as much as possible to get a nap for at least one hour or one hour 30 minutes before the game. And then I do read my Bible, because I need some scriptures, so when I go to the pitch, I remember them for the game.

“They give me confidence to play on the pitch. And then I take my time, envisioning the game two hours before the game.”

The path, the passion, the inspiration. ⚽

With the World Cup ticket sealed, Chukwu could reach the stars

The last few months have been really big for Chukwu, as he has gone from playing for an academy in Nigeria to the youth team of Hoffenheim.

If he continues to improve, he might even get promoted to the senior team and start rubbing shoulders with Super Eagles defender Kevin Akoguma.

But for now, his focus will be to win the Under-20 AFCON with Nigeria and help them win the tournament in Chile later this year.

“Qualifying for the World Cup is one thing that I am ready to do now. We are very, very ready to win the World Cup, and if we win the trophy back home, to God.”

Nigeria has never won the Under-20 FIFA World Cup. The odds are stacked against the Flying Eagles right now. But if Chukwu and his teammates go on to win the tournament, they will surely write their names in the history books of the nation.
