Super Eagles and Nottingham Forest forward, Michael Taiwo Awoniyi, has broken silence after he was in a coma due to a surgical operation, Soccernet.ng reports.

The 27-year-old collided with the woodwork in Forest's 2-2 clash against Leicester City and tried to continue. Upon further checks, it was discovered that the situation was critical and he was required to undergo an emergency surgical operation on a ruptured intestine.

Awoniyi was then placed into an induced coma, which he's thankfully now out of, and he's on his way to full recovery, although it's highly unlikely he'll still play this season.

The former Mainz 05 striker received loads of well wishes from his teammates, ex-teammates, coaches, club staff and fans as they hope he recovers to continue his football career in due time.

Awoniyi took to his Instagram account to thank all his well wishers and let them know about the status of his current condition.

“This season has been one of the most difficult of my career, but through it all, I have felt the love. With the grace of God, I am grateful to still be here, to still be fighting, to still be smiling, and to be in good spirits.

“To my teammates, coaches, staff and the entire Forest family, thank you for your well wishes. Seeing you all on your visits to the hospital lifted my spirits more than words can say.

“Wishing the boys the very best in these last two games. Keep believing and keeping pushing. I'ma with you all the way and I cant wait to be back out there with the boys doing what I love.

“To my family, friends and football fans, thank you for the support, and to everyone back home in Nigeria who has checked in on me, prayed for me and left kind words, thank you. I see them, I feel them, and I carry them with everyday as I recover,”  the Nottingham Forest forward wrote.
