Eric Chelle’s future as Nigeria’s head coach is in doubt, with reports suggesting the Malian is contemplating terminating his contract just two months into his tenure, Soccernet.ng reports.

Eric Chelle, who was appointed in January as the 37th head coach of the Super Eagles, signed a two-year deal with an option for an additional year if he qualifies Nigeria for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

However, uncertainty over his long-term position has reportedly left him reconsidering his role.

According to Nigerian sports journalist Osasu Obayiuwana, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has convened an emergency meeting to discuss the situation.

“Eric Chelle is considering terminating his contract as Super Eagles manager. Sources within the NFF say that uncertainty over his fate beyond the FIFA World Cup qualifying series has led to a dramatic change of heart. The NFF will hold a crisis meeting to address the matter,” Obayiuwana revealed.

Eric Chelle has overseen just two matches since his appointment, guiding Nigeria to a 2-0 victory over Rwanda in Kigali before a frustrating 1-1 draw with Zimbabwe in Uyo.

While some fans have criticised his tactical choices, others believe the team’s lacklustre performances should be blamed on the players rather than the coach.

Despite the speculation surrounding his future, Eric Chelle remains engaged in his role.

He is currently in Europe, scouting Nigerian players and attempting to persuade dual-national youngsters to commit to the Super Eagles. One of his main targets is Arsenal starlet Ethan Nwaneri.

The 17-year-old attacking midfielder, who has impressed under Mikel Arteta, remains eligible for both Nigeria and England. While he has represented England at youth level, he has not yet pledged allegiance to the senior team, leaving the door open for a potential switch.

With the next round of World Cup qualifiers scheduled for September, Chelle has already begun plans to reshape his squad.

Nigeria will host Rwanda in Uyo before making the trip to South Africa to tackle the Bafana Bafana in what could potentially be a make-or-mar affair.

Osasu Obayiuwana clarifies Eric Chelle exit rumours as April Fool’s prank

However, fresh developments suggest that the uncertainty surrounding Chelle’s future may have been exaggerated.

Hours after breaking the story, journalist Osasu Obayiuwana clarified that his earlier post was an April Fool’s prank, quelling the growing speculation about Chelle’s potential exit.

Obayiuwana’s revelation has left many fans relieved, while others have criticised the timing of the joke, given the Super Eagles' recent struggles.

Nonetheless, Chelle remains focused on his job, with his immediate priority being squad reinforcements ahead of Nigeria’s crucial World Cup qualifiers in September.
