Nigerian forward Dickson Abiama finally opened his goal account for 1860 Munich with a well-taken strike in their emphatic 5-1 home victory over Energie Cottbus in the German 3. Liga on Saturday, Soccernet.ng reports.

The 26-year-old, who is among the Nigerian players with the most Bundesliga appearances (24), joined 1860 Munich on loan from Kaiserslautern in January to bolster their attacking options.

However, it took him nine games to find the back of the net.

After drawing blanks in his first eight outings—against Osnabrück, Unterhaching, Wehen Wiesbaden, Borussia Dortmund II, Hannover 96 II, Arminia Bielefeld, Dynamo Dresden, and Ingolstadt—Abiama broke his duck in style.

It took the Super Eagles hopeful just 15 minutes to make his mark, firing a right-footed effort from the centre of the box into the roof of the net following an intelligent assist from Julian Guttau.

Abiama’s goal set the tone for what would become a dominant performance by the hosts.

Tunay Deniz and a brace from Patrick Hobsch extended Munich’s lead to 4-0 before Timmy Thiele pulled one back for the visitors.

An unfortunate own goal from Joshua Putze sealed the rout for 1860 Munich, restoring their four-goal cushion and wrapping up a vital three points.

Though it was Abiama’s first goal for his new club, it marked the 36th of his senior career. He previously netted 15 times for Greuther Fürth, 17 for SC Eltersdorf, twice for Greuther Fürth II, and once for Quelle Fürth.

The result was particularly notable given Energie Cottbus’ strong form this season. The defeat was their heaviest of the campaign, denting their promotion push from second place in the standings. They now trail league leaders Dynamo Dresden by four points.

Meanwhile, the victory offers breathing space for 1860 Munich, who now sit six points clear of the relegation zone.

Abiama and 1860 Munich will look to build on this momentum when they face Sandhausen on April 9.
