Bayer Leverkusen forward Victor Boniface has reacted to his team’s UEFA Champions League exit at the hands of Bayern Munich, Soccernet.ng reports.

The 2024-25 Bundesliga title contenders suffered a 2-0 defeat at the Bay Area on Tuesday night, confirming a 5-0 aggregate loss that saw Vincent Kompany’s men advance to the quarter-finals. Harry Kane opened the scoring early in the second half before Alphonso Davies sealed the victory for Bayern.

The Super Eagles striker, who recently returned from injury, came off the bench in the second leg but was unable to inspire a comeback for Xabi Alonso’s side.

Xabi Alonso reflects on Leverkusen’s UCL exit

Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso admitted that his side had already lost the tie before the second leg, citing costly mistakes in the first encounter in Munich.

“We didn't lose the Round of 16 tie today but rather in Munich. In the end, we weren't clinical enough, and we made too many mistakes. The Champions League is a competition where you can't afford to make many mistakes,” Alonso said in his post-match press conference.

Boniface’s performance vs Bayern Munich (2nd leg)

Boniface featured for 25 minutes in the second leg but struggled to make a significant impact. Per Sofascore, the Super Eagles forward registered 16 touches, completed four of his six passes (67%), and won two of his three ground duels.

Despite a 0.29 expected goals (xG) rating, he failed to register a shot on target, with all four of his attempts being blocked. He also won just one of his five aerial duels and recorded one tackle but made no interceptions or clearances.

Leverkusen will now shift focus to their domestic league clash against VfB Stuttgart, where they remain one of the favourites to clinch the Bundesliga title.
