Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso has revealed that Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface could get some game time when they play RB Leipzig this weekend, Soccernet.ng reports.
Boniface has been out of action since last November due to a thigh injury. The 24-year-old striker has missed 12 games since then.
He returned to training just before the Christmas break. Unfortunately, his return was delayed due to a setback.
Boniface returned to the bench for the first time this year in Bayer Leverkusen’s 2-1 loss to Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League in mid-week. He eventually sat out the entire fixture.
Die Werkself’s next game is a Bundesliga fixture against Leipzig at the Red Bull Arena. And ahead of the fixture, Alonso has revealed that Boniface could get some playing time this weekend.
When queried on if the Super Eagles star will play this weekend, Alonso said, “Yes. We’ll see, but he’s in the squad.”
The game at Leipzig will be a tough test for Die Werkself, as Die Roten Bullen is one of the top sides in the Bundesliga. However, Boniface does not have a good record against them, as he failed to score in previous fixtures.
Alonso will also not be under pressure to give Boniface a starting shirt, as Patrik Schick has been in fine form since the turn of the year. The Czech star has contributed eight goals in his last seven games.
