Paulo Fonseca: Samuel Chukwueze parts ways with second coach since joining AC Milan

Super Eagles star Samuel Chukwueze has parted ways with Portuguese manager Paulo Fonseca following AC Milan’s 1-1 draw against AS Roma at the San Siro, Soccernet.ng reports.

The Rossoneri have endured a disappointing start to the 2024/25 campaign, winning just seven of their 17 matches and sitting in eighth place in the Serie A standings.

The draw against Roma appears to have been the final straw for Fonseca, who confirmed his departure to journalists waiting outside the stadium.

“I’ve just learnt that I’ve been sacked as coach. That’s life, that’s how it is. My conscience is calm because I did everything I could,” said the former Braga and Lille boss.

Fonseca replaced Stefano Pioli at the end of the 2023/24 season and was officially appointed Milan’s manager in June 2024.

Under his tenure, Chukwueze featured in 22 matches, scoring three goals and providing one assist—an improvement in playing time compared to his stint under Pioli.

The Nigerian winger had earlier expressed gratitude for the trust Fonseca placed in him, telling MilanTV, as quoted by Milan Posts:

“Fonseca trusts me, he believes in me. I’m happy to have my chance and want to repay the coach’s confidence.”

However, the ambitions of the Super Eagles winger to shine further under Fonseca have been cut short by the manager’s dismissal.

Despite being linked with moves to Arsenal, Besiktas, and Aston Villa, Chukwueze will now focus on impressing Milan’s next head coach as he looks to solidify his place in the squad.
