Jose Peseiro has recently guided the Super Eagles of Nigeria to securing the AFCON 2023 ticket slated to hold in Côte d’Ivoire, but his less-than-impressive performance by the Super Eagles may stall a contract renewal.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has responded to recent rumours regarding the renewal of Super Eagles Manager Jose Peseiro’s contract, stating that no such decision has been made, Soccernet.ng reports.
Contrary to recent reports, the NFF clarified that they have not yet initiated the process of reviewing Peseiro’s contract, which is set to expire this week.
Meanwhile, Soccernet.ng earlier reported that the NFF President revealed his cabinet’s plans to use social media platforms to gauge the sentiments of Nigerians regarding the plan to retain the Portuguese coach as the leader of the Super Eagles.
Following this, there have been rumours from some local media outlet that the Nigerian Football body have extended the contract of the former Venezuelan boss till after the Africa Cup of Nations tournament.
But The Guardian, speaking to the NFF Media Director, Ademola Olajire, revealed that the NFF is unaware of the contract renewal and any official information regarding Peseiro’s contract renewal will be released by the federation at the appropriate time.
“I am not aware that Peseiro’s contract has been renewed. Such information will be released by the NFF when it happens,” Olajire said.
Peseiro was appointed as the national team’s new coach on May 15, 2022, following Austin Eguavoen’s return to his Technical Director role within the NFF.
Earning a monthly salary of $70,000, Peseiro’s tenure has been met with mixed reviews due to what some perceive as a less-than-impressive performance by the Super Eagles under his guidance.
However, with the team securing qualification for the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations by defeating the Sierra Leon 3-2 in Liberia, there are indications that Peseiro might be offered a short-term contract extension.
Meanwhile, amidst the speculation surrounding Peseiro’s future, there are murmurs within the football community suggesting that Emmanuel Amuneke and Finidi George, are seen as potential candidates to bring fresh perspectives and inject renewed vigour into the national team setup.
But, as the NFF deliberates on the future of the Super Eagles’ coaching staff, the Nigerian football community await an official announcement regarding Peseiro’s contract and the potential direction the team will take moving forward.
