The Canadians gave a good account of themselves in their opening fixture against Belgium, but Croatia proved to be too good for them
Samuel Adekugbe and his Canadian side were knocked out of the 2022 FIFA World Cup after they suffered a 4-1 drubbing against Croatia.
Canada gave a good account of themselves in their opening day 1-0 loss to Belgium. Buoyed by that performance, they were looking to shock Croatia in their second fixture.
The Canadians had a dream start as Alphonso Davies gave them the lead within two minutes. It looked like the Reds were going to see out the lead till halftime, but Croatia had other plans.
The Vatreni pulled one back through Andre Kramaric in the 36th minute. Then, Marko Livaja scored just before halftime to give the Croats the lead going into the break.
Kramaric scored his second in the second half, and Lovro Majer completed Croatia’s four-goal haul just before halftime.
Nigerian-Canadian Adekugbe was introduced into the game in the 72nd minute, but he was unable to affect the game much as his side were destroyed 4-1.
The loss ensures that Canada have been knocked out of the World Cup irrespective of the result of their final game against Cameroon.
Adekugbe has Nigerian parents, but he was born in Canada.
