In the first edition of CarBall With Babajide Guerrero, the presenter went on a ride with foremost Nigerian comedian and actor Ayo Makun, popularly known as AY.
Guerrero in the interview asked AY which country he will be supporting at the World Cup -and why he chose to support Arsenal despite many other clubs recording more success.
The longtime Arsenal fan revealed which team he thinks has what it takes to shock the world and why he chose to support the Gunners.
Why Senegal will shock the world at Qatar 2022
AY said Senegal have shown they are an archetypal African team, filled with talent but in need of the final piece – the right people to make it count. The Senegalese won the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations spearheaded by their star Sadio Mane who recently transferred to Bayern Munich.
“I’m still going to back my African side,” he said.
“You see what the Senegalese are doing right now (laughs), they’ll shock people o. They’ll do well. They remind me of what Abedi Pele did with Ghana. They’re going to remind me of what the Cameroonian legend, Roger Milla did.
“All of that are still going to come back to play because look at Real Madrid, 70% are black players. Look at the French side that won the World Cup, all eleven players except one or two are black players, which means we have it inside of us.
“What we lack is the technical know-how and by the time we bring in the right people to do the right thing and teach us what to do… because the talent is there. We are blessed with such talented human resources that can do and undo and I see all of that happening in the Senegalese side.”
Why AY chose to support Arsenal
AY is an Arsenal fan of many years and has been seen celebrating the club’s wins or complaining about their poor performances.
“Some of you just want to find a way to ta sí wa (”insult us” in Yoruba),” he replied Guerrero’s question.
“Who’s Chelsea? Awon Garage Boys (those Garage Boys),” he threw jibes at Chelsea fans.
When Guerrero asked why he hasn’t chosen a team like Manchester City, AY resorted to poetry to aim kicks at the Citizens’ shocking capitulation against Real Madrid last season.
“Man in what City that Real Madrid kept it real in their lives,” he said, to Guerrero’s excitement.
“It’s been long since I’ve been supporting Arsenal. Since the days of Kanu Nwankwo. Kanu brought that love. You know as Nigerians, we love to see our own succeed so anywhere they go, we go,” AY said.
