The Super Eagles striker has been linked with a move away from Cegeka Arena, but his new boss believes in his abilities
New Genk boss Wouter Vrancken has affirmed his belief in Cyriel Dessers’ quality and is open to keeping the Super Eagles star despite links with a move away from the club.
Dessers joined Genk in 2020, but he struggled for playing time in his first season. However, the 27-year-old left Cegeka Arena for Feyenoord on a loan deal last summer.
The transfer paid off for Dessers, as the Super Eagles striker shone like a million stars for the former Dutch Champions.
Dessers recorded twenty goals and four assists in 41 appearances last season. The Nigerian striker was the highest goalscorer with ten goals in the maiden edition of the Europa Conference League.
Nonetheless, Feyenoord refused to retain Dessers, citing paucity of funds as the reason for their decision. In fact, the Castle Lords have lost most of their attacking firepower, with Luis Sinisterra, Guus Til, Bryan Linsen, and Reiss Nelson all leaving the club this summer.
Dessers’ future has been in the balance, especially with compatriot Paul Onuachu still at the club.
However, Vrancken who took over the reins at Genk in July has revealed that he wants Dessers to stay put.
“He came in here the right way,” Vrancken told HLN.
“Cyriel is Cyriel, he confirms the positive stories I’ve heard about him. You will have no problems with him in terms of mentality.”
