The Super Eagles midfielder looks set to play a significant role at the St. Mary’s next season, as he has been handed an iconic jersey
Southampton have handed Super Eagles midfielder Joe Aribo the iconic jersey number 7 ahead of the new Premier League season.
Aribo just arrived in England this summer, leaving Rangers for Southampton in a deal worth €7.1 million. The Nigerian midfielder played an important role for the Gers last season, featuring in 57 games.
Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhüttl has made glowing remarks about the 25-year-old, and it seems he would make Aribo a key fixture in his lineup next season.
The Super Eagles star has been handed the iconic number 7 jersey at Southampton taking over from Shane Long who just left the club for Reading.
Aribo takes over from striker Long who made 243 appearances for Southampton, notching 37 goals and 27 assists.
The number 7 jersey has been donned by some of the deadliest strikers that have graced the Premier League.
Belgian striker Matthew Le Tissier who scored 101 Premier League goals wore the shirt for Southampton. Also, Kevin Phillips who registered 93 Premier League goals wore the number between 2003-2005 for the club.
Former Liverpool man Rickie Lambert wore the jersey during his five-year stay at the club.
Aribo has a big job on his hands, but he would draw inspiration from his last two seasons at Rangers.
