The Nigerian striker attracted interest from several topsides in Europe, but it was the Italian side that eventually won the race for his signature
Details have now emerged on why Super Eagles biggest star, Victor Osimhen, decided to sign for Serie A giants, Napoli.
Osimhen became Africa’s most expensive player when The Parthenopeans paid a club-record fee of 80m euros to sign him from Ligue 1 side, Lille.
The Nigerian international was reportedly a target for a host of top clubs across Europe following his impressive season which saw him score 18 goals in 38 games for Les Douges.
But despite the obvious interest from other European clubs, it was Napoli that won the battle for his services. The move came as a surprise to some as they believe Italy is not the right place for Osimhen’s development.
However, according to the player’s agent, William D’Avila, per SSC Napoli news, Osimhen chose Gli Azzurri because it was the best option for him.
“We chose Napoli because we think that, strictly from a sporting point of view, it was the most interesting solution for him, D’Avila said.
“Also because historically, whoever played in this role for Napoli has scored many goals. We are so happy with the choice we made.”
The Nigerian international has reportedly taken the number nine jersey, which shows his readiness to do the business at Naples.
Hmmm!
He chose the club because Lille preferred selling than keeping him.
And he’s not the most expensive transfer in Africa (but only in Nigeria). He’s sold for €50 million, the extra €30+ million includes add-ons, salary, and others.
Pepe (Arsenal) is still the most expensive in Africa.
