Nigeria dominance over South Africa continued after they defeated them 2-1 in the quarterfinal of the Total Africa Cup of Nations going on in Egypt.
The Super Eagles have a 100 per cent record over their perennial rivals in Africa’s biggest competition and they made it three out of three with last night’s win.
The victory ensured Nigeria’s progress to the semifinals- their eighth appearance at this stage in the last nine editions. The Super Eagles took the lead in the 27th minute through highly rated Villarreal youngster, Samuel Chukwueze.
The 19-year-old finished from close range following a low cross from Arsenal star Alex Iwobi. The Super Eagles were dangerous on the break and had more chances to extend their lead but couldn’t convert any.
They went into the half with the lead but South Africa drew level after resumption through Bongani Zungu- heading home from a Percy Tau freekick.
Although he was in an offside position, the goal was given after VAR reviewed the ball came off Ighalo’s back before he headed home.
With the game set for extra time, Udinese centre back William Troost Ekong popped in South Africa’s box to bundle home from a Moses Simon corner.
