Super Falcons suffer painful record after South Africa defeat

The Super Falcons suffered a disappointing 2-1 defeat to South Africa on Thursday night, ending their hopes of qualifying for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, Soccernet.ng reports.

Nigeria faced their arch-rivals in the World Cup play-in after crashing out of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations at the quarter-final stage, where they suffered a 1-0 defeat to Cameroon.

That result was already historic, as it marked the first time Nigeria had failed to reach the semi-finals since the inception of the WAFCON tournament. However, they were handed another opportunity to keep their World Cup hopes alive with a play-in clash against South Africa.

Banyana Banyana had also been eliminated at the quarter-final stage after losing 2-1 to Morocco, setting up the decisive encounter between two of Africa’s biggest women’s football nations in Casablanca.

However, it was another missed opportunity for the Super Falcons, who suffered another defeat and will now miss next year’s World Cup.

After a goalless first half, Thembi Kgatlana opened the scoring for South Africa in the 56th minute, leaving Nigeria with a difficult task of chasing the game.

Refiloe Jane then doubled South Africa’s advantage in the 77th minute, putting Banyana Banyana in a commanding position.

Christy Ucheibe gave Nigeria a lifeline when she converted from the penalty spot to reduce the deficit, setting up a tense finish.

However, the Super Falcons could not find the equaliser they desperately needed, and their World Cup hopes were ended by the defeat.

Super Falcons set new ‘painful’ record

The Super Falcons had qualified for every edition of the FIFA Women’s World Cup since the tournament was first held in 1991, making them one of the few teams to have featured at every edition.

However, that remarkable record has now come to an end. For the first time in their history, Nigeria have failed to qualify for the Women’s World Cup, marking a new low for the country’s women’s football.

The Super Falcons entered the 2026 WAFCON as defending champions and among the favourites to retain their title. They were also expected to challenge for top spot in their group, but a shock 3-2 defeat to Malawi in their opening game immediately put them under pressure.

Nigeria recovered from that setback by winning their next two group matches, beating Zambia 1-0 before recording an emphatic 6-2 victory over Egypt.

However, they fell short at the most important stage, suffering a 1-0 quarter-final defeat to Cameroon before failing to take advantage of their second opportunity against South Africa.

The Super Falcons had reached the Round of 16 at the last World Cup before eventually losing to beaten finalists England on penalties.

They will now miss the next edition of the competition after failing to overcome South Africa.

Banyana Banyana, meanwhile, will advance to the intercontinental play-offs, where they will fight for a place at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

Africa’s other representatives in the intercontinental play-offs will be Malawi, Cameroon, Morocco and Algeria, while Ghana will also compete for a World Cup place after beating Ivory Coast in the other play-in encounter.
