Liverpool and Newcastle United have recently submitted enquiries to sign Victor Osimhen, Soccernet.ng reports.
But the two Premier League clubs’ hopes of signing Osimhen have been dashed as both clubs were put off by the Nigerian striker’s hefty price tag.
According to a report from Corriere dello Sport, relayed by Paisley Gates, Liverpool and Newcastle United made inquiries to Napoli regarding a potential transfer for Osimhen during the ongoing transfer window.
However, the two clubs were left disappointed by Napoli’s asking price for the player.
Osimhen’s journey at Napoli has been one of remarkable growth since his arrival from Lille almost three years ago. Despite initial doubts surrounding his €75 million price tag, the 24-year-old has proven his worth and become a vital player for Napoli.
His impressive performance helped the team secure the long-elusive Serie A title last season, netting 31 goals and providing five assists in 39 appearances.
Liverpool and Newcastle United’s interest in Osimhen is surprising given their existing pool of strikers. However, the Nigerian forward would undoubtedly be an upgrade for Jurgen Klopp and Eddie Howe’s squads.
Recent reports even suggested that Liverpool was preparing a bid to secure Osimhen’s services, while Newcastle United had also considered making a substantial offer.
Nevertheless, the clubs’ attempts to secure Osimhen’s signature have been met with frustration. The asking price set by Napoli has left Liverpool and Newcastle United “angry and outraged,” according to the report.
It is widely believed that Napoli will demand a fee well over the €75 million they originally paid for the player.
Considering Napoli’s rising stock and the unlikelihood of a club submitting an exorbitant offer, Osimhen’s summer move seems highly improbable.
As a result, both Liverpool and Newcastle United will now turn their attention to alternative targets. The prolific striker is set to remain at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium unless an astronomical bid materialises.
