Racing Santander have set their sights on acquiring talented Super Eagles midfielder Kelechi Nwakali from relegated Deportiva Ponferradina, Soccernet.ng reports.
Nwakali has been an influential player for Ponferradina, but his departure seems imminent due to their relegation from La Liga 2.
According to Racinguismo, Mikel Martija, the sporting director of Racing Santander, confirmed their interest in Nwakali during an interview with Cope Cantabria.
Martija acknowledged that the Nigerian midfielder is on their radar, although other clubs in the same category are also interested in securing his services.
Ponferradina are one of four clubs, including Málaga, Ibiza, and Lugo, that were relegation from the Segunda Division this season.
In contrast, Racing Santander finished in a relatively comfortable 12th position, ten points above the relegation zone.
With Ponferradina’s relegation, it becomes highly unlikely for a player of Nwakali’s caliber and profile to remain in the First RFEF.
Ponferradina, however, expect compensation for Nwakali’s departure and anticipates a significant fee. On the other hand, Racing Santander have made it clear that they will not pay transfer fees or release clauses for any player this summer.
Nwakali, 25, was a regular starter for Ponferradina during the recently-concluded campaign, featuring in 36 league games. The former Arsenal lad contributed four assists, scored one goal, and received 11 yellow cards.
Nwakali previously played for Spanish sides Huesca and Alcorcón.
