Despite an impressive display from Samuel Chukwueze, Villarreal suffered a disappointing 2-1 loss to Real Valladolid at Estadio de la Cerámica on a sunny Saturday afternoon.
The Yellow Submarines we’re looking to continue their winning streak after a dramatic 3-2 win over Real Madrid last week, but it was not meant to be.
Chukwueze had been the star of the show at the Santiago Bernabeu, netting two goals, including a spectacular winner that gave Villarreal a historic victory.
However, on Saturday, the Super Eagles winger barely had time to settle into the game before Selim Amallah rolled in the opener for the visitors in the second minute.
In the 15th minute, Chukwueze thought he had equalized for Villarreal, but his goal was ruled out for offside in the buildup.
Matters worsened for the hosts as El Yamiq smashed a fierce drive home to double Real Valladolid’s advantage before halftime.
Chukwueze looked to force a response for Villarreal shortly after the restart as he glided past his marker before sending a curler to the far post, but the ball struck the woodwork and went out of play.
Minutes later, he had an even better chance when a low cross-field pass met him in the box, but he lost his balance at the crucial moment after dribbling past the keeper, and he sent his final effort wide off target with the goal gaping.
Despite former Tottenham man Etienne Capoue reducing the deficit for Villarreal in the 76th minute, Valladolid held on to claim all three points.
By full-time, Chukwueze had completed eight dribbles and created two chances, but he would not be pleased with how his day turned out.
The loss was a disappointing result for Villarreal, particularly after their win over Real Madrid, and it highlighted the inconsistency that has plagued them this season. They must regroup quickly and find a way to maintain their form if they hope to challenge for a European spot.
