Ex international, Ike Shorunmu has exonerated Super Eagles goalkeeper, Daniel Akpeyi for the opening goal the team conceded against Lesotho in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier on Sunday.
Akpeyi was criticized by some section of the media for his poor misjudgment of Lesotho’s opening goal in Nigeria’s 4-2 victory on Sunday.
Recall that a goal from Alex Iwobi, Samuel Chukwueze and a brace from Victor Osimhen gave the Super Eagles the maximum points that maintained their leadership position of Group L of the qualifying series.
However, Shorunmu told Soccernet.ng in chat that the Kaizers Chief goalkeeper deserves some element of commendation regardless of the goal he conceded.
“It will be unfair to judge Super Eagles goalkeeper, Daniel Akpeyi for the goal the team conceded against Lesotho,” Shorunmu told Soccernet.ng.
“One thing we must understand is that goalkeepers are humans and they can never be perfect. The best goalkeepers in the world always have their downtime and that was exactly what happens to Akpeyi.
“I am just delighted that the team recovered from the shock goal they conceded and went ahead to beat Lesotho 4-2 at home. You can’t tell me that Akpeyi’s general performance was not good because of the goal the team conceded.
In addion 2 dat no human being is perfect enough in these would.AKPEYI need much attention in his club side.TYP ETUKS
