Wilfred Ndidi: Why his first Beşiktaş Europe goal matters to Chelle

Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi scored his first European goal for Beşiktaş on Thursday, a 45+2 minute opener in a 2-2 Europa League draw with Crystal Palace, ahead of Nigeria's two AFCON qualifiers against Tanzania in November.

The Nigerian midfielder ran onto a long pass from Salih Özcan and finished past Walter Benítez in first-half stoppage time in Istanbul. It was also Beşiktaş's first shot on target of the night.

The draw leaves Beşiktaş eighth in the 36-team Europa League table with seven points, with a trip to Celtic next.

Ndidi's job is to protect the back line, so a goal is a bonus rather than the measure of his game. A first European goal for the club is still worth recording, and it came from a run onto a long ball, not a set piece.

Analysis: what the goal says about the captain heading into November

One goal does not change a season, and it should not be read as a sign that Ndidi's role has changed. What it does show is a captain playing at the top level of European club football in the weeks before Chelle names his squad for the Tanzania games.

That matters because the Eagles' qualifying path is narrow. Soccernet has explained why Nigeria's AFCON 2027 hopes run through Tanzania, and the coach is reported to be adding new faces such as Banik Ostrava defender Abdullahi Bewene. A captain in form gives that squad an anchor.

If the goal is a sign of Ndidi growing into his new club, Chelle gets a midfield leader arriving in camp with confidence. That is the real value of a first European goal for the Eagles.

Beşiktaş's next European assignment is the trip to Celtic.
