Report: Deborah Abiodun signs Spirit deal to 2028 while injured

Super Falcons midfielder Deborah Abiodun has re-signed with NWSL club Washington Spirit on a two-year deal through 2028, Complete Sports reports, while she recovers from an injury picked up on club duty.

The contract carries an option to extend by one more year, according to the report. The 22-year-old defensive midfielder joined the Spirit from the Pittsburgh Panthers in January 2025.

She went on loan to USL Super League club Dallas Trinity the following month, and the Spirit recalled her on 26 August 2026. Her record for the club stands at 21 appearances, one goal and one assist under head coach Adrián González.

Why sign while injured?

The answer, on the face of it, is security. A longer contract gives a young player a stable base while she works back to fitness, and it tells her that the club sees a future for her beyond this recovery.

Analysis: security first, the Falcons later

For the Falcons, the news cuts two ways. A 22-year-old defensive midfielder tied to an NWSL club until 2028 is a player with a steady platform and regular top-level football, which is what a national team wants from its midfield pool.

The question is when she is back. Nigeria's Olympic qualifying path goes through Morocco, as Soccernet explained after the Comoros tie, and whether Abiodun is available for that stage depends on how her recovery goes.

It is part of a wider picture for the Falcons, which Soccernet examined when it asked why Nigeria's World Cup place is in doubt despite the team's ranking.

The next update to watch is her recovery.
