Super Eagles star furious after Trabzonspor loss to Konyaspor – ‘Very angry and very sad’

Chibuike Nwaiwu was left angry and disappointed after Trabzonspor suffered a 1-0 defeat away to Konyaspor in the Turkish Super Lig on Saturday, Soccernet.ng reports.

The Super Eagles defender started the game at the MEDAŞ Konya Büyükşehir Stadium as Trabzonspor suffered their second league defeat of the 2026-27 campaign.

Rajmund Tóth scored after just two minutes, giving Konyaspor a lead they protected until the final whistle. Despite Trabzonspor controlling 71 percent of possession, but they failed to register a shot on target.

The visitors also had Paul Onuachu, last season's top goalscorer, and former Liverpool hero Mo Salah on the pitch for the entire duration of the encounter. Still, the two exciting attackers could not conjur an equaliser for the Huseyin Cimsir-led side.

Another Super Eagles defender Chidozie Awaziem was an 83rd minute substitute for Konyaspor, with the former Nantes ace helping the hosts keep a clean sheet.

Nwaiwu frustrated by Trabzonspor missed chances

Nwaiwu pointed to the difference between the two teams in front of goal when explaining the defeat.

The 23-year-old thanked the Trabzonspor supporters who travelled to Konya before admitting that his team could not make the most of its opportunities.

“I always want to say this: I thank our fans who came all the way here,” Nwaiwu said via Aspor. “Football is like that; sometimes you can't take advantage of opportunities, while your opponent takes advantage of the opportunities they get.”

Nwaiwu did not hide his feelings after the final whistle.

“Actually, I'm very angry and very sad right now. It was a very demoralizing defeat for all of us.”

The result was particularly frustrating because Trabzonspor had entered the match after a 5-0 league win over Gençlerbirliği last week. That victory had followed a 2-1 home win over Başakşehir and suggested the team was building momentum.

The loss in Konya instead left Trabzonspor with a 2-1-2 league record after five matches. Nwaiwu has started all five of those league games and has played 441 minutes, making him a regular part of the defence under Trabzonspor.
