Super Eagles star to dump Nottingham Forest for Coventry City in shock transfer deal

Nottingham Forest have two Super Eagles players in their squad, but one of them is set to join Coventry City, Soccernet.ng reports.

​Coventry City are fresh off winning the English Championship, thereby sealing promotion to the Premier League. They have been in the market for players who can help them in their first season in the top flight.

​They have already signed players like Amenda Aurele, Caleb Yirenkyi, Carl Rushworth, and Nigerian midfielder Frank Onyeka.

​However, they are set to complete the signing of another Nigerian in what is their marquee transfer of the summer.

​This comes as transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reports that the club has agreed on terms with Nottingham Forest for the signing of Taiwo Awoniyi.

Awoniyi will join the Sky Blues in a permanent transfer, with medicals already ongoing as of the time of this report.

Just three days ago, he was in action for the Tricky Trees as they defeated Bayer Leverkusen 2-1 in a pre-season friendly. But apparently, that will be his last game in a Nottingham Forest shirt.

As of now, the details of the transfer are not known, but that should be revealed subsequently. With this move, Ola Aina will become the only Super Eagles player left at Nottingham Forest.

Taiwo Awoniyi: Super Eagles Star's Four-Year Nottingham Rodeo Ends

Taiwo Awoniyi joined Nottingham Forest from Union Berlin in 2022, in a deal worth €20.5million. At the time, the club had just gained promotion to the Premier League, and the 29-year-old marksman was still trying to find his feet.

Recall that he joined Liverpool in 2015 as a youth player, but he could never play for the first team due to his inability to secure a work permit. As a result, he had to be sent out on several loan spells at FSV Frankfurt, NEC Nijmegen, Mouscron, KAA Gent, Mainz, and of course, Union Berlin, who he eventually signed for permanently.

​From his first year at Nottingham Forest, he established himself as a key player, scoring crucial goals to save the club from relegation.

​He repeated the same feat in his second year, cementing his status as a fan favourite. However, injuries have plagued him throughout his time in England, leaving the Super Eagles star frequently on the treatment table.

In fact, he has missed 56 games for club and country due to injury, which resulted in him losing his place in the team to Chris Wood and Igor Jesus.​Coming into this summer, his future hung in the balance following the appointment of Oliver Glasner as Nottingham Forest coach. There has been very little talk about him though, which is why this move comes as a big surprise.
