Ademola Lookman: Super Eagles attacker reacts to Diego Simeone’s apology

Super Eagles attacker Ademola Lookman has responded to Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone’s apology for playing him out of position at the start of the 2026/2027 La Liga season, Soccernet.ng reports

Simeone deployed Lookman as a centre-forward in Atletico’s opening two league matches against Malaga and Villarreal, but the former Atalanta forward was unable to find the back of the net or create an opening for his teammates to score.

The Argentine coach later apologised to the 28-year-old, admitting that playing him through the middle was not his ideal position. Simeone had been forced to improvise because of the unavailability of Julian Alvarez and Alexander Sorloth.

Ademola Lookman reacts to Diego Simeone's apology

Lookman returned to his preferred left-wing role in Atletico’s clash with Sevilla on Saturday and responded in style, opening his goalscoring account for the season in the 3-1 victory at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán.

“It was important for us to continue in the way we've started the season,” the 2024 CAF Player of the Year said in an interview with ESPN.

“Three games, seven points, it's positive. So, we have to keep on improving, keep on getting better as a team, and then winning, it's the most important.”

Speaking after the win, the Nigeria international revealed that he remains positive about working under Simeone and is focused on learning from the Atletico boss and his coaching staff.

“Playing under the Mister is great. I am learning a lot and trying to improve. Learning from him and his staff is important for me to keep improving and help the team,” Lookman concluded.

The former RB Leipzig forward will be looking to continue his top form when they take on Athletic Club on Saturday.
